Lets find out how to understand and learn fractions. Understanding the concept is the most important thing in Maths. Many a time teachers in order to explain the concept, they start with a specific formula or algorithm to take out the correct answer.  We need to understand that it is important to understand that memorizing formulas may help in short term. But not in the long term.

Just like in order to understand any language, we build vocabulary first, do a lot of reading and writing. Each alphabet is understood, its connection with the next ,forming  the words and then meaningful sentences. In the same manner, Maths should be treated as language.

Founder of Winaum Learning and Maplemaths, Manjusha explains, “When asked to the students 8 ÷ 4 , they would answer 8 ÷ 4 as 2 but they would have a problem in complex fractions like 1 ÷ 1/3 . A few might remember the formula of flipping the last fraction and they will take out the answer.  But when asked why it is done, they would just say that it is calculated as per the formula and thereby its answer.

Maths depends on logic. Hence, clarity with logic helps student apply it in any other similar situations. For this, child should be able to visualize and therefore teaching fraction concept with visual aids helps. Thereby, complimenting it with speed calculation techniques, one can attempt questions with logic and save time.

A student could understand that 8 ÷ 4 = 2 because exactly 2 fours fit into 8, then they can use the same idea to discover that 1 ÷ 1/3 = 3 because exactly 3 one-thirds fit into 1. This concept can easily help to understand different types of fractions.

Do you think a child will ever forget this wonderfully explained mathematical reasoning like this? We don’t think so! This academic session, let your child discover the new way of learning with MapleMaths
